Announcement: Amazon GameLift Server Utilization Improvements

With Amazon GameLift, you can automatically scale server capacity up and down to ensure you use only what you need. We make continuous improvements to our autoscaling and server packing systems to help you maximize the utilization of your fleet. With this release of Amazon GameLift, we are rolling out a new set of additions and improvements to these systems.

We have added three new autoscaling metrics: Percent Idle Instances, Available Game Sessions, and Percent Available Game Sessions. Percent Idle Instances (and Idle Instances) help you write autoscaling policies to scale down the number of server instances in your fleet. Percent Available Game Sessions and Available Game Sessions help you write autoscaling policies to scale up the number of server instances in your fleet. These new auto-scaling metrics, along with the added capability to adjust the number of server instances based on a percentage (in additional to an absolute value), will enable you to write autoscaling policies that more efficiently manage the server instances in your fleet.

We shortened the length of time it takes to scale down a server instance. This change will allow the number of server instances in your fleet to more quickly scale down to actual need.

Finally, we improved the algorithm that chooses which server instance to place a new game session. The algorithm now more tightly packs game sessions onto server instances, maximizing the use of existing server instances before autoscaling policies to scale up server instances are triggered.
