Terrain Normal Maps?

So you can height maps, splat/height maps for texture constraints (this is huge and awesome), and mega textures across the entire terrain, but I do wonder if the ALY team has considered doing a similar and corresponding terrain Normal map input to go along with the terrain height maps, etc just to add that much more depth to the overall geometry of environment.

Maybe this is my inexperience, but would something like this matter?

Or maybe there is a way to do this, but I am just unaware of it.
